Interview: Anna Larimore

MEET Anna Larimore– Traveler, Writer, & College Babe

Garden Route, South Africa, June 2015. The most beautiful place I’ve ever been in my life. Of all of the places I’ve been, South Africa takes the lead by a longshot. It’s home to me. GoPro picture.

Ahhh! Anna Larimore is SO inspiring. I know you guys will agree with me once you read her interview.

All of her answers are SO on point & its just really the perfect read while finishing off your week.

Anna & I went to high school together but I was younger so we never really crossed paths at the time. BUT- over the past year or so, Anna, has inspired me so much through her traveling and writing. She has helped me A LOT with writing and blogging. Whether its with her amaze blog posts she writes or sending me journalism notes from her lectures (life savor), or even just commenting something nice on a post I worked hard on, she’s always there to encourage & support!

SOOO, then I came to a conclusion. I NEED to interview her!

So, to say i’m excited for this post is kind of the understatement of the year!

I hope she inspires you readers with her free spirit like she has for me!

Now, lets get to it.

Tell us a little about yourself:

I can’t write about any of my travel stories unless I explain why it is that I travel. It’s long, but it will make more sense if I spill it all out. So, here you go. Why I Travel.

My background: Born and raised in Howard County, Maryland. I’m the 3rd child of 4; I have an older brother and an older sister. I also have a younger sister who passed away who is my guardian angel, especially when I travel. Both of my older siblings are married, and each have 3 kids…so I’m “Aunt Anna” to 6 perfect people! 3 girls and 3 boys. I have a ton of cousins, aunts, and uncles, and my parents are the greatest and most in-love people you’ll ever meet. I am very close to my grandparents and very close to both my brother-in-law and my sister-in-law. Anyone who knows me knows that my family is my life.

My love for travel started at a young age. I left the country twice before my first birthday: a summer spent in Canada at 6 months old and Christmas in London (my first Christmas) when I was 11 months old. I actually said my first word and took my first steps in London. That’s probably the biggest indication that I’d be spending the rest of my life with a love for travel.
I had a stay-at-home Dad growing up. All my life, he would take me on day-trips all over the place. I’ve been to, I think, 35 states. We spent a summer together just the two of us all over Maine, Nova Scotia, Canada and Prince Edward Island, Canada for several years in a row. My Dad instilled such a strong sense of adventure in me from a young age. I hiked trails at 8 years old with death warnings all up the mountain. I rafted the Tidal Bore. I saw so much wildlife. I understood, at a very young age, that I appreciated the world around me, and I was brave enough to travel without my mother…a big deal for a small child who loves her Momma! These father-daughter trips are some of my most precious memories with my Dad. I also started going to sleep-away camp every year for 10 years when I was 8 years old. I was never a homebody. I wanted the independent adventure. I was capable of the independent adventure.

My parents have always loved to travel. One time, my Dad made French bread, Scotch, and London Broil for dinner and surprised my Mom with a trip to France, London, and Scotland! They also travel throughout the Caribbean more than any people I know. They are big travel people, and I’ve always admired that.

I went on my first tropical vacation at 16. My good friend had an aunt and uncle who bought a resort in Meads Bay, Anguilla and built a gorgeous house on the property. To get there, we had to fly to St. Maarten. We spent the day there before taking a boat to Anguilla. Never in my life had I been exposed to such luxury. Staying at the nicest house on the island while indulging in the heaven that is the Gourmet Capital of the Caribbean made me pretty much the luckiest 16-year-old ever. There is no nightlife, so my days consisted of eating expensive food, drinking expensive champagne, and laying on the most gorgeous empty beaches and infinity pools in the world. I went back and did the same trip again when I was 18. The unusual combination of prestige and lack of activity on the island gave me a simultaneous understanding and appreciation for both luxury and simplicity. I don’t need a lot — but I can appreciate the finer things in life.
I was a dancer growing up. I danced pretty much my whole life, and I got to travel around the United States for dance. My mom came with me, and when dancing was over, we would turn our trips into mother-daughter trips. Those were special to me. Dancing was special to me.
As college approached, I thought I would be pursuing dance at the collegiate level, so I began to prepare for that. I had a boyfriend all of high school, and I had a lot of friends. It wasn’t until the end of high school when I realized that most my friends did not have my best interest, and neither did my boyfriend. I needed to rid myself from them; their cruelty left a negative impact on my life that was so great that I became incredibly depressed. I needed to get away. So, what did I do? I went to the farthest school I got into. I moved 900 miles away to Mississippi to attend Ole Miss. There was no dance program there. My boyfriend had broken up with me. My friends had ditched me. At that point, I realized I no longer had the three things that meant the most to me. Even worse, the running-away feeling that they made me feel forced me to leave the very most important thing to me: my family. Home no longer felt like home. I needed to start over. I needed to find something better. So, two days after my youngest nephew was born…I moved away.

Luckily for me, Ole Miss turned out to be the school of my dreams. I met the most incredible friends, went (and still go to) every football game including just about every away game, and I even took a private jet to spring break as a freshman. I’ve had the opportunity to travel all over the Southeastern United States to have experiences in cities that most people dream of. My life had turned around. I met people who were positive influences on me and gave me their positive energy. I was happy about this.

But I was sometimes still feeling sorry for myself. I had a hard time getting over what happened to me in high school, and I was constantly looking to maximize my life to compensate for the time I spent moping. When I realized this, I was on a mother-daughter trip with my Mom in Mexico to celebrate finishing my first year of college. It was a wonderful trip, filled with snorkeling in cenotes, rappelling, zip-lining, dancing, boating, and massages on the beach. We explored the ruins of Tulum, the markets of Isla Mujeres, and the nightlife of Cancun. I was reminded, while having these thoughts, that I really am the best version of myself when I travel. Important realization. To be continued.

Upon my return to America, I also realized that I missed having a hobby that was more of a full-on passion. Dance, sadly, wasn’t a part of my life anymore. I didn’t know if I could ever replace it…but I could certainly pick up something else. I’d always loved writing, and I’d always been good at writing, so I thought I’d start a blog. I would write about all of the places I’ve traveled to, all of the beauty secrets I’d learned at my job, all of the exercise knowledge I had from dance…I’d inspire people! And I’d be working on a hobby again! And it would be wonderful!

But it was hard work.

I started my first blog, Love All Things Britney, and tried to post at least three times a week. I spent days staying up all night writing a variety of content that I thought would reach a wide audience. Before I knew it…I was getting hundreds of comments, shares, and likes on posts. I woke up one morning and saw that I had over 13,000 views on a single post in one night. My project was working. I was enjoying myself in a hobby again.

Sophomore year of college came along, I did some reevaluation, and I decided that I needed to find more out of life. College was great to me, my college friends were great to me, and I still had my amazing family, but I was craving that feeling of “starting over” again. Since it had treated me so well when I relocated to Mississippi, I knew it was a feeling I sought and would continue to seek. I was incredibly depressed again; I was feeling like all of the amazing college experiences I had were a result of running away from what I couldn’t have anymore. I needed something that was mine, something that I did because I wanted to do it, not because I felt like I had to do it.

I heard about a study abroad program called Global LEAD that was going to Cape Town, South Africa. I got my best friend, Amber, on board, and within only 7 days, we were committed to study abroad. It was incredibly spontaneous. I was going to Africa!

So: Here comes in the REAL turning point of my life, as it pertains to travel and personal development.

Africa turned out to be the most life-changing trip I could have asked for. I went cage diving with great white sharks where Discovery Channel’s “Shark Week” is filmed, did the tallest bungee jump in the world, went skydiving, hiked Table Mountain, rappelled down Table Mountain (the tallest abseil in the world), went on a safari, rode an elephant, and pet cheetahs. I served in a township called Sir Lowry’s Pass, where I worked with children and families. I built connections with those people and learned the true power of love. I met the most amazing friends of my life, and they will, without a doubt, be my bridesmaids in my wedding and the Godmothers of my babies. I took leadership classes, global citizenship classes, history classes, and service learning classes to better understand myself, my world, and my place in my world. I came away from the trip having officially been bitten by the travel bug with no Benadryl that could ever do the job to stop me from scratching the itch. (Figurative). Oh…and I came away from the trip with a tattoo. Something I said I’d never do. Again…itch. (Literal).

When I returned home from my trip, my parents sat me down and told me that my Dad had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. Had I not just come from the most incredible study abroad program where I learned to expand my emotional capacity, this would have destroyed me. But, I did, and still do, my best to stay strong.

I blogged about my trip in-depth on Love All Things Britney during my time abroad, and upon my return, I wrote a final reflection post. One of the quotes in the piece said something like this…

“It was the trip that opened my mind and heart, helped me to strengthen relationships that needed to be strengthened and eliminate relationships that needed to be eliminated, changed my way of believing everything I thought I knew. It made me who I am at this point of my life, and who I will be in the future. It brought clarity to who I’ve always been. By jumping, literally, outside of my comfort zone…I found myself. What could be more special?”

Little did I know, the CEO of the study abroad company had been reading my blog. He reached out to me and offered me a position in writing the company blog and working on the company website. My journalism career was taking off! (I major in journalism, print emphasis, public relations specialization with minors in English and Spanish). So, I began my internship writing the company blog, and I also gained a position in recruiting and marketing for the company. Studying abroad, literally, became my life. I spent every single day this year helping people study abroad.

Fast-forward to now – I applied, was accepted, and completed an international internship with the same company and returned back to Cape Town, South Africa this summer for 2 months. I was able to be a staff member on the trip with which I was previously a student, and I worked hard in understanding the logistics of what makes a good study abroad program and how the power of travel can change the trajectory of individuals’ lives, thus inspiring them to become the best versions of themselves, impact their communities, and work to create a better world. I got to return to Sir Lowry’s Pass, continuing to pour love into and receive love from the wonderful people there, and I got to go on all of my once-in-a-lifetime adventures for a second time. Most importantly, I got to work with other college students who are soul-searching just like I was/am.

When finishing the internship, I went to Europe, where I am right this second, to backpack. I traveled throughout the United Kingdom, Italy, and France, both solo and with friends from study abroad. I met people from all over the world. I used my knowledge of the power of conversation to ask people their life stories and encourage them to ask others the same. I immersed myself in new cultures, submerged myself into the world outside of my comfort zone, got lost on trains, ate new foods, and spoke new languages. I poured sweat as I climbed mountains with a backpack. I flew from continent to continent completely alone. I asked questions. I found answers.

In Europe, I realized that the best trips are those that answer the questions that you didn’t even ask. And in Africa, I realized that most people go to Africa thinking that Africa needs them. But because of the unparalleled passion of Africa that gave me a different understanding of gratitude and zest for life, I needed Africa more than Africa needed me.

As my trip comes to an end, I remember all that got me here, the good and the bad. A lot of the people who wronged me in high school have admitted to me that their college experiences aren’t half of what I’ve made mine, and that they’re sorry for what they’ve said and done. A lot of those people haven’t apologized, but that’s ok, too. I’m not bitter anymore. I’ve found peace in new people, new places, and new ideas. I’m out seeing the world and working on becoming the best version of myself that I can be. I can only hope, that for the sake of the future of our world, those people will find a passion with which they can create a lifestyle that will help them understand themselves and others better. I hope everyone can do their own version of good in the world.

I’m about to finish up school, and then I am backpacking through Europe with my best friend, Amber, the same friend who studied abroad in South Africa with me. I plan on moving abroad at some point, and I’m still working out those logistics. I’m hoping to move to Brisbane, Australia and dance for a company called Mega Jam that I have admired for years. Travel is a huge part of my life. Writing is a huge part of my life. But, I want to make dance, again, a huge part of my life. Until then…

I live for my next adventure: testing physical limits, exploring emotional capacities, broadening mental perspectives.

For me, every day is an adventure. Join us (Global LEAD) in hashtagging #todaysadventure on Instagram. What are you going to do today to make today, right now, this very second, an adventure? Don’t wait for the future. The future is right now, and you can do with it whatever you wish.

There’s a quote that I read that I feel resonates well with me. It reads:

“If you’re not obsessed with the life you live, change it.”

I am obsessed. And I wouldn’t change a thing.

Paris, France, July 2015. My current city crush. I love everything about Paris…from the fashion, to the lights, to the young people, to the bread.

Weekly Workout Schedule: (what’s your secret/how do you keep the bod perf)

The secret? I don’t work out! I know — it’s horrible. When I was a dancer, so, my whole life up until my sophomore year of college, I was exercising 6-7 days a week. Exercise was MY LIFE. After quitting dance, I completely stopped exercising with the exception of a few health kicks here and there over the years. The only form of exercise I’m getting regularly these days — HIKING. I have hiked A TON recently, from Table Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa, one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature (and, sidenote, my tattoo), to the Eiffel Tower, and few days ago I hiked Cinque Terre, 5 towns in the Italian Riviera. I love hiking. It’s super challenging, but a great whole-body workout. I also biked Versailles yesterday; I covered about 2000 acres. But don’t be fooled – I do NOT bike often! Other forms of exercise that I love: dancing (of course), yoga, and pilates. I’ll take a spin class once in a blue moon at school. When I DO go to the gym, I start by going on a walk, then the elliptical, then the bike, then lifting, then crunches, then butt-ups, then stretching. Then another walk! I HATE running; you will never catch me running. I’ve done a couple 5Ks, and I’d like to train for a half-marathon just to accomplish something I struggle with. Dancing is by far the best workout I’ve ever had. I miss it terribly. And I miss that dancer body I used to have. I want to get back into exercise! This is one of my goals for the upcoming school year.

Table Mountain, Cape Town, South Africa, June 2015. One of the New 7 Wonders of Nature. Here, I’ve hiked it for the second time, and I’m showing off my tattoo: the coordinates of Table Mountain. The most omniscient part of my favorite place in the world, the place that gave me a love of life and a sense of wonder.

A Day In The Life: (whats a typical day in your shoes)
I live out of a backpack right now. For the past couple of months, I’ve been traveling through Africa and Europe. A typical day in my life right now is waking up early and checking my emails over hot tea. I love to be up early before everyone else. It’s my quiet time…I just kind of feel like time is paused and there’s no rush and I have nowhere to be and no one to answer to. Serenity. Then I get ready for the day, usually just throwing on a big t-shirt and Nike shorts or something casual from Urban Outfitters, and I head out for my #todaysadventure. I don’t wear makeup most days, so getting ready isn’t usually a big part of my day. I usually spend the first part of my day at markets, listening to live music, having brunch food and drinks, and shopping around for books, flowers, crafts, take-home foods, etc. Then in the afternoon I usually go do something physical, like go on a hike or have a picnic in the gardens. I spend a lot of afternoons in coffeehouses and bookstores, too. In the evening I head to the beach with a bottle of wine and watch the sunset. This is also my journaling time, so it’s very precious to me. At night, I love a good dinner and good drinks! I’m such a baby — I’m always the one to fall asleep first — so I love to eat a great meal, split a bottle of wine, and go to BED in my sweatpants! This is my typical day abroad.
A typical day at school would be as follows: wake up early with my tea and my computer, go to school, drive around Oxford listening to music with the windows down, walk around The Square and get something to eat and do a little shopping, and have friends over at my house to drink on my balcony. I love to be outside, and I love to cook for my friends. On a weekend, I like to hike the trails, go to Memphis, pick crawfish, lay out at my pool, and have friends over at my house. I LOVE to host — my house is always the go-to house. I also go to church every Sunday, usually by myself.

One of my travel journals at the moment. I currently have this one and a leather one with my name engraved. Also notice the polaroid picture of Table Mountain — my new favorite toy! Journaling is for my most personal travel memories.

Muizenburg, South Africa, May 2015. Surfing in one of the top 20 places in the world to surf.

Cocktail of Your Choice:
Actually, I’m a beer girl. I kind of drink like a man. Never into anything girly.

If I had to pick something…there’s nothing quite like a really good, really cold Margarita on the rocks.

BUT — I will say — this drink I’ve been having everywhere I’ve been in Europe called a “Spritz,” made with Prosecco, is my current favorite.

Cinque Terre, Italy, July 2015. I hiked these 5 towns that are connected by gorgeous mountains and the bluest water imaginable. I met some incredible people from all over the world hiking Cinque Terre. Highly recommended.

Secret Beauty Tip:
Oh, boy. Remember when I said I don’t wear makeup every day? Disclaimer: I absolutely love makeup. I just like to be fresh and natural most of the time. I worked at a salon and spa for several years, and I have an older sister who loved giving me makeovers. I’ve always been a crazy beauty product junkie.
My absolute favorite products that I cannot live without:
Unite Seven Seconds Leave-In Conditioner plus the Wet Brush. THE BEST COMBINATION EVER. Say goodbye to tangles and dryness. Every time I get out of the shower, I spritz this all over my hair and comb it out with the Wet Brush. Life-changing.
Hoola bronzer by Benefit Cosmetics. When I was in 7th grade, I went into Sephora and asked for the best bronzer on the shelf. This is what I was handed, and as a senior in college, I’m still using it. I’ve gotten at least 10 people to swear by it over the years, too. The reason it’s so great is because it’s shimmer-free, so you can put it anywhere on your body, and it looks natural. No glitter, no orange, just brown. Bronzer, not orangizer.

Evian Mineral Spray. I carry this EVERYWHERE. On a plane, in my purse, in my backpack, in my car. It can set your makeup, or it can be used on just fresh, clean skin. It hydrates my skin and leaves it fresh all day!

The list goes on, but I won’t bore you. Read about it all on the beauty section of my blog.

Chianti, Tuscany, Italy, July 2015. Went on a wine tour and absolutely fell in love with the Italian countryside! Hat by Free People

Tips For Success:
You can’t go after what you want if you don’t know who you are. Do some soul-searching, whatever that means for you. Identify your values. Create a vision statement for your life. Focus your energy more on maximizing your strengths and less on improving your weaknesses; you’ll invest more in the world. Vow to live by that vision statement while upholding your values and using your strengths. Go on a solo adventure and put them to the test. Meet new people. See new things. Invest your energy into those who are good to you, and never give those who aren’t a second of your time ever again.
Be kind and work hard and good things will happen.
Sir Lowry’s Pass, South Africa, May 2015. Here I am reunited with one of my favorite kids in the township, Ronaldo. This place has taught me such compassion. Service: because we can, we must.

Favorite go-to Healthy Food:
Remember when I said I didn’t work out? I also don’t eat healthy. I love healthy foods, don’t get me wrong! But I am such a foodie, and I love unhealthy foods too much to give them up. Favorite healthy food, though: fruit. At school I make smoothies with kale, blueberries, strawberries, banana, ice, and Greek yogurt. Super filling with multi-grain toast and an egg. I like everything, though. I’m not a picky eater.
Also, I’d have to say I’m one of the biggest avocado lovers of all-time. I make a pretty badass homemade guacamole, and I love to eat avocado toast, too. Good fats! Antioxidants! Yay for avo!
Styles You’re Loving Lately:
Long choker beaded necklaces. One loop hangs low, and the other is a choker. I also love tassle necklaces.

Birkenstocks.

Huge hats.

I really love Free People, and my best friend is working there now, so she’s been buying me some goodies! Some of my favorite clothes that I own are Free People. Anything that is versatile and that I can throw on effortlessly is my kind of outfit.

Cape Town, South Africa, May 2015. One of my very favorite markets, called Hout Bay, sold these cool signs. “Ubuntu” is a South African word for a universal concept, essentially meaning “people are people through other people” or “I am because you are.” I have learned so much about the way that the world impacts the type of person that I am, and I’ve had such a recent restoration of faith in humanity. This word means a lot to me.

A Message to Your Fans/ Other Dreamers:
Risk more than others think is safe. Care more than others think is wise. Dream more than others think is practical. Expect more than others think is possible.

Cape Town, South Africa, June 2014. Skydiving on my very last day in Cape Town the first year.

Backwards Bungee Jump, Garden Route, South Africa, June 2015. I first bungee jumped in June 2014. That was forwards. But, a year later, I thought I’d conquer the tallest bungee bridge in the world for a second time…backwards.

I’m curious to find out what blog system you are working with?
I’m experiencing some small security problems with my
latest site and I’d like to find something more safe. Do you have any suggestions?

Admiring the persistence you put into your blog and in depth information you present.
It’s good to come across a blog every once in a while that isn’t the same old rehashed
information. Great read! I’ve saved your site and I’m adding your RSS feeds to my Google account.

Have you ever considered about including a little bit more
than just your articles? I mean, what you say is important and all.

However think of if you added some great images or videos to give your posts
more, “pop”! Your content is excellent but with images and clips,
this site could certainly be one of the best in its field.
    Great blog!

I’m really enjoying the design and layout of your website.

It’s a very easy on the eyes which makes it much more pleasant for me
to come here and visit more often. Did you hire out a designer to create your theme?
    Great work!
