HOW TO DEFINE YOUR STYLE ON A BUDGET
Hi my fashionistas,
Today we are getting real on TBD when it comes to defining your style BUT on a budget.
Most of us want to look hott but don’t have Kim K or Yeezy’s bank accounts. And guess what- we don’t need too!
We can strut the streets on a budget and its my job to tell ya how.
Now, the next big issue us ladies have is thinking that carrying our Louie’s while walking around in our Loubs makes us fashionable… um no.
Now don’t get me wrong splurging every once in a while on designer IS okay and you totes deserve it but don’t call yourself a stylenanda for digging in your basic bitch folder.
Rant Over.
Basically, you can look beeeautiful on a budget and here is how —-
First off, before you can define your style on a budget, you need to define your style (or else you will end up looking like Britney circa 2007)
Pretty much all of us girls admire a certain celeb, blogger, or even a friend’s style (we all insta stalk that one chick with great style) and were always LIKING, pinning, saving, screenshotting (don’t deny the screenshot, group message pic).
Basically, the women that we want to befriend just so we can borrow shit out of their closet, are considered our style muses. They are the women who have mastered the type of style you’re drawn to and would like to have.
Now, grab a pen + paper and write down a list of at least 5 of those women that give you total outfit inspiration. Look at the commonalities between them. See a pattern? I bet you do.
p.s here is my list
- Marianna Hewitt
- Olivia Palmero
- Olivia Culpo
- Vanessa Hudgens
- Maria Menounos
What does each of these women have in common? They all have a simple, classy, yet boho-chic vibe.
If you are having a little trouble finding your style muses, just go to your fashion or style Pinterest board. Who do you see more than anyone else?
We all have those outfits. You know the ones that make you say YAAAS and usually the one you take the most snaps in.
Why do we love them? Because we feel hott and comfortable as shit. The next time you are having a YAS moment in your outfit, snap a couple selfies and full length pictures. These outfits likely capture your true personal style.
STYLE TIP: Snap photos in multiple angles that way you can see how the outfit looks on your body. Or micromanage your boyfriend into becoming your personal photographer. Hee hee.
Alright babes, now its time to take a good look at the photos you’ve snapped and your inspirational photos on Pinterest. Do you see any obvious repeats or patterns? I’m SURE you do.
Got it? K cool, these items are the FOUNDATION of your personal style. These are the items you should invest in because you will actually wear them.
The easiest way to do this is to analyze your Pinterest board or even your recently liked photos on Instagram. Once you do this, you’ll see exactly what I’m talking about. You’ll see exactly what type of style you are drawn to
Mine looks a little like this
+ linens
+ whites, greys, soft pastels & LOTS of black
+ jumpsuits & breezy maxis
+ strappy sandals
And whaddya know, I’m currently in all black with a touch of white. Simple & chic totes my jam.
This is my favorite part but its tricky so stick with me, ok?
Its time to find words that define our style. Grab that piece of paper I told you to get earlier and jot down words that describe the pictures you’ve taken or pinned.
Mine looks something like this
Side note: You don’t have to box yourself into a specific category. I LOVE experimenting with an outfit every once in a while and thats perfectly ok. This is just an exercise to determine your personal style that way you aren’t wandering around aimlessly in Nords or spending money on something that is going to sit in the back of your closet for the next 2 years.
Sometimes you can learn a shit ton about personal style by going through an organizing your closet.
Your closet most likely has a few forgotten about pieces. You know, the ones you waited in line 20 minutes for that still have the tags on them? Yep, those ones.
You probably don’t wear those dusty clothes for a reason. Hint: They aren’t your style. They aren’t flattering. They don’t look right with anything. You get the point. They suck.
Heres what I do:
- Take an inventory of your back of the closet items
Whats makes your back of the closet items different than the ones you listed above. What makes them similar?
A lot of my back of the closet items are cropped tops and body con dresses. Why? Well honestly, they look cuter on the mannequin. And being 5’2 in a crop top only screams one thing… Senior week.
My takeaway: STOP buying items that I cant picture myself wearing every day.
Seriously though, I’ve saved SO much money doing this trick. Before I purchase any type of clothing I always ask my self if I can wear this M-F. Because you can’t wear a cropped top on a Tuesday morning. Unless your name is Kylie.
2. Ditch em.
Buhhh-bye to your back of the closet items. I mean, unless it’s a sweater granny knitted you or anything with any LEGIT sentimental value, ditch it. I highly recommend posting on Tradesy or even creating a Facebook page or Instagram account to sell your items.
Did you determine that you have more of a feminine-polished look? Work it! Congrats on nailing down your personal style.
Now, before you get carried away buying everything pink with diamonds on it. Chill. Be realistic. HOW will your personal style fit into your every day life? If you work for Obama, can you really where fringe or hot pink every day?
You will need to invest in a couple of items that make you happy and fit your personal style BUT also your lifestyle.
I hope you’ve gotten a little bit closer to defining your style while saving a couple of bucks.
